Understanding the Colonoscopy | Haymarket
It is always important to enter any medical procedure with a full knowledge of what you will be undergoing.
One of most commonly dreaded medical procedures we all must encounter at some point is the Colonoscopy. Haymarket, Virginia surgeons share their insights below.
What is a Colonoscopy?
A Colonoscopy is a routine exam where the large intestine and rectum are checked for any abnormalities.
What Happens During a Colonoscopy?
During a Colonoscopy a large tube with an attached camera is inserted in to the rectum and continues on through the large intestine.
If any abnormal tissue or polyps are identified during the procedure, your doctor can remove them during your treatment session.
You doctor is also able to take biopsies, if needed, during the colonoscopy.
Benefits of a Colonoscopy
Your doctor will likely recommend a Colonoscopy for many reasons.
The colonoscopy is able to screen for colon cancer, monitor for polyps and to help understand any distress symptoms such as abdominal pain, rectal bleeding or chronic intestinal issues.
After Your Colonoscopy
Following your colonoscopy, you may experience gas, or bloating.
This is normal and should stop after a few hours.
You may notice some blood in your first bowel movement following your colonoscopy, this is also normal but should be discussed if it continues.
Your doctor will be able to discuss your results following your procedure.
